For push-in type Christmas lamps, simply insert the cap of the lamp between the metal contacts of the tester.
Make sure the wires from the lamp touch the contacts.
Screw capped lamps should be held at an angle so that the centre contact of the lamp touches one of the tester's contacts and the screw thread touches the other.
